BBLBIA Attend UN Human Rights Council

Report by Jeremy Havardi

In March BBLBIA Director, Jeremy Havardi, conducted three days of lobbying with senior international diplomats at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Together with B’nai B’rith representatives from around the world, he met a number of Ambassadors to discuss the endemic anti-Israel bias of the Council and how this might be overcome. He took part in meetings with the Ambassadors or deputy representatives of Jordan, Mozambique, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Cyprus and Jamaica. He also spoke to senior figures in the Council’s Secretariat, the OHCHR, and received a briefing from Israel’s Ambassador to the Council, Aviva Roz Schechter. He also met the UNHRC’s Director General at an annual diplomatic reception at the Palais Des Nations. Many of the diplomats that BB spoke to were fully aware of anti-Israel bias, in particular item 7 of the Council’s agenda which singles out Israel for discriminatory treatment on human rights. By highlighting this and other issues, BB once again showed its importance in advocating for Israel and the Jewish people.
