BBUK statement on recent events in Charlottesville
Report by Jeremy Havardi
The scenes we observed in Charlottesville were truly painful to watch. Thousands of white supremacists marched under the banner of swastikas and directed odious expressions of hatred towards Jewish people.
Congregants in the nearby synagogue were forced to hire an armed guard and hide Torah scrolls following calls to burn the building.
BBUK condemns unreservedly these displays of hatred from neo-Nazis and other white supremacists. As British Jews, we are all too well aware of the lethal nature of prejudice, whether directed towards Jews or any other minority. Such
expressions of bigotry and prejudice have no place in amodern progressive society.
We stand with all those across the US, and beyond, who reject the poisonous politics of racism in favour of tolerance and freedom.
